About the event

Republic Talk-ies | ರಿಪಬ್ಲಿಕ್ ಟಾಕೀಸ್ | An evening of Cinema & Conversation
A panel discussion of three filmmakers - ‘Seeing Between the Lines’, followed by a curated short-film screenings

About this Event

When India wrote its Constitution, it also wrote a vision for itself — of liberty, equality, and justice not as ideals, but as ways of living and imagining the future. Cinema has always been one of the most powerful mirrors of that imagination.

Today, a new generation of filmmakers is expanding how India is seen and heard — from crowded cities and quiet villages to women’s collectives and working-class homes. Their stories are local, but they speak of the Republic in all its complexity-- diverse, fragile, and full of possibility.

Republic Talk-ies brings together three filmmakers for ‘Seeing Between the Lines’, a conversation on how their cinema interprets and reshapes the idea of India.

Hosted by IHA in collaboration with Radio Azim Premji University

Our panellists (Seeing Between the Lines)
  • Sindhu Sreenivasa Murthy, director of Aachar & Co., captures Bengaluru’s evolving middle class through humour, nostalgia, and a distinctly feminist lens.
  • Roopa Rao, whose Gantumoote (2019) broke ground as one of Kannada cinema’s most intimate coming-of-age films, explores adolescence, desire, and the quiet rebellion of a young woman finding her own language.
  • Prateek Prajosh, director of Chilly Chicken, turns the camera toward the city’s unseen corners — portraying the everyday experiences of the northeastern community in Bengaluru, and how prejudice, food, and friendship reveal deeper truths about identity and belonging.

The panel discussion is followed by a curated short-film screening by Anand Varadaraj, Founder and Artistic Director of the Bangalore International Short Film Festival, that exemplifies different ways of “seeing between the lines”. The Films are:

  • Loo, directed by Chanakya Vyas When basic infrastructure becomes a marker of class and dignity.
  • Aadu Aaneya Nungi, directed by Punith Sakiya When help and dignity collide, silence becomes statement.
  • Sunflowers Were the First Ones to Know…, directed by Chidananda S. Naik The first Kannada film to win at Cannes, blending folklore with social truth.
